Description
To Rebecca Taylor, her job had become simple. Sort of like lather, rinse, repeat. She travels throughout the country certifying fire station equipment. She’s a fully certified fire fighter, but her area of expertise is in testing out new equipment that will save lives. She lands up at Station 5 in Phoenix, AZ, the one place she’s been trying to avoid.
She grew up just outside the city, along with the newly hired sexy lieutenant, Sam Evans. He was best friend’s with Becca’s brother, before he died in a random fire almost a decade earlier.
Heat runs ramped in the city of Phoenix—dessert sun, burning buildings, and the undeniable hot attraction between Becca and Sam.
When the past begins to appear in familiar fire patterns, Becca is startled to realize there may be an arsonist in the city. Her brother, Corey’s death had been ruled an accident. Will she be able to prove it was murder before the arsonist comes looking for her?

Prologue
“Please, Corey, come with me.”
“Why don’t you go by yourself?”
“Because it’s coming from the forest. You know I hate going in there alone.”
“Fine, but if we get lost again, it’s your fault.”
“Whatever, let’s just go. Please hurry. It sounds hurt.”
Becca and her brother Corey wandered through the forest, searching for the crying dog. Becca had heard it from her bedroom window and had the great idea of going and rescuing it, dragging Corey along with her. Corey took the lead, stepping on any roots that arched from the ground. Keeping his little fifteen-year-old sister safe was always his first priority. Becca grew scared the further into the forest they went until Corey was walking beside her, draping an arm around his sister’s shoulder, comforting her with distracting conversation. “So what are you going to do with it, once you find it?”
“Maybe mom will let us keep it.”
“What if it already has a home?”
“Not a very good home if it’s whining that badly. It has to be a stray.”
“And you think mom would let you keep a stray in her house?”
“Maybe I could train it. It’s not that hard to train a dog.”
“Harder than you’d think, Becks.”
“You could help me then.”
“I don’t want to train a dog.”
“But you’d do it for me.” Becca looked up at Corey and smiled. She knew he’d melt as soon as she said that. There was absolutely nothing he wouldn’t do for her, and now she was going to get a new pet dog.
They continued deeper and deeper into the woods until the whining of the dog was ringing through their ears. It was loud and it was in pain. Becca rushed through the final chunk of woods to where the dog was whining. She hesitated when she reached the slight clearing. The dog was trapped in what seemed like an old, abandoned cabin.
“Whoa, stay back, Becks.” Corey grabbed the hem of her shirt to stop her. “Let me check it out first.”
“But the dog needs us.” She wanted to plug her ears now from its terrible cries.
“I’ll go help the dog, you stay here. Please.”
Corey always worried too much, but Becca nodded and stood away from the cabin. Corey followed the cabin around the side, looking for a way into what seemed to be a door-less cabin.
“Hurry up, Corey, I think I see blood.” Becca’s tummy cramped as she caught sight of a yellow bundle of fur.
The dog was scratching frantically with one paw against the window in front of Becca, the paw leaving small streaks of bright red against the dirty glass. Becca wrapped her arms around herself as she watched the dog struggle to get out, her feet getting antsy the longer Corey took to find a way inside.
Finally, Corey came into view of the window, picking up the dog and flashing Becca a proud smile. He had found a way in and rescued the dog, motioning toward the back of the cabin with his head. The dog licked him, and his paws clawed wildly at his shirt, leaving red streaks.
Becca cheered with relief and began to move. She rushed around the side cabin, realizing it was longer than she had thought it initially was.
A limping golden retriever came up to her feet. Whining and rubbing its face against her leg, she rubbed behind its ears the way Corey had taught her when she was very little. The dog nuzzled its snout at the back of her leg, hitting behind her knee. It buckled and she fell down laughing as the dog jumped over her and licked her face. It stood on three legs, refusing to put weight on the sore paw.
Becca sat up and the dog stayed right beside her. “Corey?” she called out, but
the dog’s bark drowned out her voice. She laughed. “Okay, okay, puppy. I’ll wait here with you. Corey’s my brother, he just rescued you. He’ll be out in a sec. He’s pretty cool... for a brother.” Her fingers stroked through the soft hair as her free hand examined the dog’s paw. It was sliced to pieces as if someone had taken a cheese grater to it. She shuddered and checked its other paw. It looked like the dog had stepped on a shard of glass. “What happened to you, pup?”
Becca talked to and soothed the dog, being very careful not to touch its sore paws any more than she had to.
Loving the attention, the dog rolled over on its back, revealing it was a she; a female dog.
“That’s a good girl.” Becca rubbed and patted its belly. “Do you have a name?” She checked for a collar and didn’t see one. Again seeing the cuts on its paws, she shuddered and looked into its dark chocolate brown eyes. “Can I call you Braven? ‘Cause I think you’re pretty Brave.”
A strange, acrid smell began to fill the air. Becca turned her head and sniffed again, still staring at Braven’s beautiful eyes. It smelled like burning toast, but worse. After a few more inhales of the air around her, Becca coughed. The choking taste of smoke filled her mouth. She looked up from the dog and scrambled back in surprise. The entire roof of the cabin seemed to be caught in flames. They licked at the old, dry wood faster than the campfires would when they went camping in the summer.
“COREY!!”
Becca jumped up quickly, trying not to hurt the dog as she rushed around the cabin looking for the entrance Corey had found. Finding it, she slammed her whole body against the side, but the door seemed stuck or maybe locked. She pounded and kicked at the door, screaming for her brother.
She ran around the cabin, trying to find another way in, but soon the walls and everything inside was engulfed in flames. The heat seared against her fingers and arms. It was too hot.
