  I slid my hands through his hair and tried hard to control my panting. "A condom. Did you bring one?"

  He glanced up and smiled like a naughty boy who'd gotten his hand caught in the cookie jar. "If I say yes... I'm in trouble. If I say no..."

  I cut him off. "Stop dicking around. Do you have one or not?"

  "I do. In my pants. I'll get it."

  He smirked.

  “What?” I asked.

  “Nothing is sexier than a girl who knows how to take control.”

  He released me and pinched my nipple playfully.

  Though watching him walk from the water was the deepest desire I had at the moment, I knew it would be too much for the night if I let him get the rubber.

  "I am, aren't I?" I glanced over my shoulder as I gathered his jeans up.

  “You have no idea how much I want you,” he said.

  I turned and lifted my hand to my ear. "Oh no. My earrings. They were my mother’s."

  "Did you have them when you came in?" His voice was heavy with worry that filled my heart with a foreign emotion.

  "Yeah." I forced my voice to break. "Check with your feet beneath you. Maybe they fell, but they’re really big."

  "I'll go down and feel around. You look up there. We'll find them." He ducked under the water and I scurried around, gathering clothes as fast as I could.

  Moving toward the road, I slipped his t-shirt over my head and forced my pants over my legs as his voice left me almost giddy.

  "Lena? Where are you? I didn't..." He paused, and that was all I needed to let out a soft laugh.

  "I'm good, baby. I got them. I'm going home, but thanks for the great night. Good luck."

  "What? Why... where are my clothes?"

  The sound of splashing caused my heart to race. “Listen, baby. You might not understand it now, but I’m doing this for you. If you fall for me, I’ll only screw up your life. It’s better this way, trust me.”

  “Selene!”

  “And besides, I don’t fuck on the first date.”

  I got on my bike and started it as he let out a long string of curse words. Driving off, I laughed until my sides hurt and tears filled my eyes. He was going to be beyond pissed, but I didn't care. He was a dick for thinking we would have sex in the middle of the lake for our very first time.

  You thought the same and it wasn't a date.

  I laughed the whole way home, thinking about the one thing I left for him besides his bike.

  "Selene. Is that you, butterfly?" The sound of my father's voice left me jolting to a stop just inside of the large Black Hearts Motor Cycle club.

  "It is, Daddy. I just got back from a party at the lake."

  "Well, come in here and let's talk." He sounded a little liquored up.

  I let out a soft sigh and walked to the double doors that led into the dining room. Sticking my head in, I found my father looking up at the moon from one of the large bay windows. I knelt and put down the remainder of Lucky's clothes mixed with mine before walking in.

  "I would say I'm surprised you’re up, but I'm not." I chuckled and moved toward my father, pausing a few feet from him as he turned and opened his arms.

  "Come here and hug your old man."

  I moved into his hold and pressed my cheek to his silky crimson shirt. Breathing in deeply, the memories of a lonely life and the drive to please an unmovable monster tore at me.

  "I'm so proud of you for graduating today. You know, most of your cousins didn't make it out of junior high. You're our bright star." He kissed the top of my head. "A star that needs a shower, but ours nonetheless."

  I smiled and moved back. "I'm not going to college. You should know."

  His brow lifted as if questioning my motives. "No? Why is this?"

  "I want to be a patched member of the Black Hearts. I'm your only child and I have it within me to be everything you need me to be to support our heritage, to be a leader in this family." I steeled myself. This same conversation had been kicked around many times in the past, but I was actually eighteen now and it wasn't a pipe-dream, but a next step for me.

  He took me by the shoulders and gave me a loving look. "I think the fact that you want to do this is great, but wanting to do it and doing it are two very different things. You have no clue what you're asking. We have rules, trials and tests, butterfly. It's not about joining up and being granted rights and privileges because you're my daughter."

  "I understand that. I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

  "Oh yeah? Anything, huh?"

  "Yep. Lay it out and I'll kick its ass." I narrowed my eyes, needing him to believe in me. If he did, then maybe I could learn to believe in myself again.

  "Prove it, baby girl. We don't invite women into the club, but you work through our tests and pass... you're in."

  "You promise?"

  "Yep. You have my word." He pulled me into another hug. "You'll never make it, though."

  I squeezed him and ignored his negativity. I would do it. I would do anything to belong.

  There really wasn't another choice for me anyways.

  Chapter 4

  Lucky

  "Un-fucking-believable." I tugged the small white panties up and forced my dick inside the front of them before climbing on my bike and driving through the backwoods all the way home. No damn way was I hitting a road and getting pulled over for indecent exposure.

  What was she thinking? Leaving me there like that? I'm going to get her good...

  I pulled up to the small shack my father and I lived in.

  Turning off the lights and killing the engine a little ways from the house, I pushed the bike the rest of the way. Anger should have been raging through me, and it would have if it had been anyone else, but Lena wasn't being hateful. I was almost sure of that.

  The sweet sound of her laughter told me how much she yearned to have more than a night of passion. She needed a friend, a companion, someone to jack shit up with and play jokes on.

  "Fine. I can be that. Just friends though," I whispered to myself as I locked the bike up and walked into the house.

  The sound of my father snoring, loud and deep, sent another wave of relief through me. I moved into my bedroom before taking the front of the panties into my hand and starting to rip them. I stopped as I glanced down and realized they were hers.

  "You're sick. Tear them off and throw them away." I pulled them down my legs and stood back up; rubbing my boys to make sure everything was okay after the heinously tight ride back to the house.

  There was no way I was throwing them away. It was quite likely the only pair of her panties I would ever get. I opened the top drawer of my dresser and tossed them in with my clean boxers before pulling out a pair of sweats and a warm t-shirt.

  "Fuck no." My jovial mood slipped into something dark. When did she become my girl? Four years ago. The first time I laid eyes on her.

  A smile lifted my lip at the memory of telling Dane
at the beginning of their sophomore year to back off of her. My best friend was starting to get sweet on the pretty little thing and I knew then I had to come clean.

  It had been a long fucking three years of wanting to take action where Selene was concerned, as if it were that easy. Asking her out was no big deal, but I was headed for the Stone Wolves.

  The bad blood between the Wolves and Selene's whole damn family, who made up the Black Hearts, was over four generations old, but bloodlines ran deep. Everyone knew the story, but it was riveting to rehash for visitors and the new kids at school.

  It all started in the 1900's, and most of the families in the town had been there since that time. Selene's great-grandfather, Antonio, settled in Pleasant Valley in 1922, after leaving Mexico. It was after the end of the Mexican Revolution, and he and his brother Marco decided they needed a change. After so much bloodshed and travesty, the Delgado brothers wanted to get as far away from Mexico City as they could.

  They picked a spot on the map, deep in the mountains and far from the big cities. Making the trek on a pair of twin 1916 Harley Davidson J's, they drove from Mexico City to Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania. The journey took them six days and when they finally arrived in Pleasant Valley, the brothers decided they were home.

  They found work at a logging yard and saved as much money as they could. Both brothers were motorcycle enthusiasts. When they had finally saved up enough money, they reduced their hours at the logging yard, and opened up their own garage.

  They called it Delgado Motors and it still stands at the center of town today. A few months later, the Black Heart motorcycle club was born. Shortly after they arrived in town, an Irish family moved in – The Brennans. Mac Brennan and his wife, Clara arrived in town with their adult daughter, Nessa.

  For Marco, it was love at first sight. But Antonio was the first to make his move. Both brothers loved Nessa tremendously and a rivalry was born. In the end, Antonio may have won his bride, but he lost a brother.

  Showing how serious the chasm was, Marco distanced himself from the Black Hearts and founded the Stone Wolf MC. Something that happened back in 1927 was the reason why I knew without a doubt that letting my relationship with Selene go anywhere wasn't the smartest road to take.

  I called Dane and told him what happened.

  “Fuck! That little bitch! Why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.”

  “So you could take a pic and post it online. No flipping way, bro! I would never live that down. Besides, she took my phone. I’m going to go hunt her down later.”

  Crash.

  “I gotta go. My dad’s up. He knocked something over. He’s drunk again. And he’s screaming my name.”

  “I hear his loud mouth.”

  “I’ll see ya tomorrow. And don’t say a word to anyone.”

  “Of course not. Later.”

  Dane always kept my secrets. I knew he’d be loyal to the very end.

  "Lucas,” my dad said. “You home, you piece of shit?"

  "Fuck." When did you wake up, you asshole?

  I walked out into the living room as I ran my fingers through my gritty hair. "I'm here, Dad. What do you need?"

  "What do I need?" My father stood and stumbled a little.

  In my younger years, I would run toward him, reaching out and stabilizing the old man, but after a few too many choke holds and punches to the gut, I wasn't willing to take a step toward him if life depended on it. Not getting hit was the daily goal.

  "Yeah, Dad. What do you need?" I pointed to his chair. "Go sit back down in your chair. I'm not interested in getting into it with you. I've had a rough night. I don't need this right now."

  "Rough night?" The old man laughed and slapped the side of his leg as sawdust from the wood mill where he still worked flew into the air. "Rough night? The night you were born was rough. Remember what happened? You killed your momma in the process and left me to raise your ugly dumb ass? Took everything from me. Yep, you did. I hope every night is rough for you. I hope your life amounts to nothing."

  Anger burned through me like a blazing fire. How many times as a boy had I stood there helpless, carrying the burden of my mother's death thanks to my father's ignorance? I hadn't caused anything other than a few moments of joy for the poor creature before a heart attack took her. I hadn't known kindness a day in my life and I blamed her more than anyone else for it.

  She left. They all did. Every girlfriend I had, every one night stand that didn't let me hold onto her for a little while, every female friend.

  Maybe that was more the reason for keeping Lena at an arm’s length instead of the fucking MC rules.

  "Nothing huh?" I reached up and rubbed my chin. "Like yours?"

  "Fuck you, boy." My father moved across the room and for the first time ever, I got ready and before I could think about it, swung hard.

  My fist connected with the old man's chin and the bastard let out a loud cry before hitting the ground. My heart constricted painfully in my chest and I knew better, but I dropped to the floor to collect the only family I had left.

  The old man shifted and rolled me, pushing my face into the carpet and putting his knee on the back of my head as he laughed. "You think because you're a big boy you're able to whoop me? That's funny, you little shit. You ain't nothing."

  He pushed at my head harder and anger turned into incredible sadness deep inside of me. This was the life I knew. Nothing else. Maybe Selene wasn't being funny or needy, but truly sardonic with me. Maybe her intent had been to smash me into the dirt and leave me humiliated. Maybe giving her the benefit of the doubt wasn't such a good idea.

  "Nothing to say now, huh, you little pussy?" My father popped the back of my head with something hard and darkness swept in and dragged me under.

  Glass. He'd broken a glass on the back of my skull.

  "Hey buddy. You alright?" Blade reached down and pulled me up from the floor as I came to.

  "Huh? Yeah. I'm good. Just taking a nap." I reached back and brushed my hand over my head as warm liquid coated my fingers. Blood. "Fucking great."

  "You didn't answer our call, so they sent me over to check on you. Your old man was naked in the yard, so I knew the shit was bad." Blade rubbed my back and brushed the remaining glass off of me.

  "Yeah. I made the mistake of being kind. Fucked me up good for it. Nice reminder." I pulled away from the older man and walked into my room. "I'm out of here. I'll just rent a room with you guys."

  "No need to rent it. We're going to ask you to be a hang-around and before long, you'll be a prospect." Blade called after me. "That something you might be interested in?"

  "Does it mean I can get the fuck out of here?" I grabbed a large duffel bag and shoved a ton of clothes into it, only taking a moment to run my fingers over the soft white silk of Selene's panties. I spoke to the empty room around me.

  "What are you up to, Black Heart? Does the shoe fit in this case? Are you the next bitch to stab me in the chest?" I dropped the panties in the trashcan and stood over them for a minute before fishing them out. "Such a dumb-ass."

  "Who's a dumb-ass, you?" Blade moved into the door frame, the big fucker filling up most of it. His salt and pepper hair didn't help him look more distinguished, like it did most older men, but gave him a meaner look. He was all muscle and pushing sixty with all the shit to show for it.

  "Yeah, me. Who do you think I'm talking to, old goat?" I glanced over my shoulder and smirked at the only man who had acted like a father to me in the last four years.

  "Watch it, punk ass. Get your stuff and let's go. I'll carry a bag on my hog too." Blade chuckled and walked out of the room, leaving me to wonder what was so damn funny.

  I moved around the room, searching everywhere for my phone before realizing that the little tart who stole my clothes had it. I chuckled low in my chest and walked out of the house, hopefully for the last time.

  "I'm going to get you so good." I got on my bike and turned to look at Blade.r />
  "Still talking to yourself? Need a little private time today?" Blade jerked his fist up and down and gave a knowing nod. "Gonna get yourself good, huh?"

  "What? Fuck. No." I turned to pin the old bastard with a 'you gotta be kidding me' stare.

  "You said it, little shit. Not me." Blade chuckled and started his hog. "Keep that talking to yourself shit to yourself. Looks like crazy has caught up to you."

  "It did." I started my Harley and glanced back at the house. "And the bitch still has my phone too."

  Chapter 5

  Selene

  I had every intention of sneaking out the night before and leaving Lucky's cell phone on his front porch or strapped to his bike, or something. There was no way in hell I meant to keep it all damn night. He was going to be pissed for sure. I would be.

  Tucking mine in one of the pockets of my tight jeans, I slipped his in the other and walked out to the row of bikes that sat to the left of the house.

  Elec glanced up from a car he was working on in the early morning sun. "Where are you going?"

  His black hair was slicked back and his dark eyes probed me in a way that left me wanting to shiver. I forced myself to walk toward the car and press my hands to the side of it. My eldest cousin was an evil bastard, but it ran deeper than wanting to be nefarious. He had been abused so badly as a child by one of my uncles that he mentally couldn't put himself back together.

  I reached out and rubbed his hand, offering a warm smile. "I'm going for a ride. Wanna come?"

  He glanced down at my hand as if wondering why on earth I was touching him. He blinked twice and looked back up, his lips pursing tight as he tugged his hand from mine. "No, and be careful. No fucking around. Got it?"

  I stifled the 'you're not my daddy' comment and nodded instead. He had enough shit to deal with in his own skull. No need to trigger something that would set him off into a rage like only he was capable of.

  "Yeah. See you later. Enjoy this beautiful morning." I lifted my hands in the air and turned around slowly as I walked to my bike.

  He grumbled something, but I ignored him.
