  Their afternoon delight had left him feeling very content. They were lying in her bed, no sheets to cover their nudity.   He grinned. “Did you seriously just thank me for sex? Because if you did, you’re welcome, but a thank you isn’t necessary. It is I who should be thanking you.”

  Her soft giggle shook both of our bodies. “Not that. Thank you for putting me in touch with Meredith.”

  “I did nothing more than get my ass thrown in jail. She met you, liked you and really disliked your soon-to-be ex, and decided she wanted a part of kicking his ass to the curb.”

  Her sigh was loud and long. “I know this is going to sound strange and it is probably stupid, but I was terrified this morning. I had talked myself out of signing those divorce papers so many times I lost count.”

  “Why were you afraid?” he asked, his arm automatically tightening around her, pulling her naked body against his.

  Another audible sigh. “I don’t know. After being threatened for years, you start to believe it. He always told me if I tried to divorce him, he would kill me. I knew he wouldn’t kill me, but he would make me wish I was dead. That’s how he controlled me. Death would be an escape. He would never willingly let me escape. I know the divorce papers don’t really change anything and I’m sure he’s going to try and come after me again, but I don’t know, it’s like a divorce gives me some armor. Like I have told the world I am not his wife.”

  “I am your armor. I won’t let him near you,” he said, vehemently.

  She leaned up and kissed him. “Thank you. But I don’t want you to get hurt and I certainly don’t want you going to jail for me again. That was horrible.”

  “I woul
d do it again and again. I’m not going to lie; I really enjoyed hitting him, making him bleed. All I could think about was you and what you endured. I can’t wrap my mind around a man built like that hurting you,” he said, the fury making his blood boil.

  She patted his chest. “It’s okay. I survived. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? I’m a stronger person because of what I lived through.”

  “You shouldn’t have had to live through anything like that,” he growled.

  “Thank you. I know I have you in my corner and I can’t tell you how good it makes me feel. You give me strength,” she whispered, kissing him again.

  “I’ll be here for you. No matter what happens, I will always be in your corner. I’ve got you,” he said, squeezing her butt.

  “Are you hungry? We skipped lunch and I’m starving. And I want to celebrate!” she said, pulling away and sitting up beside him.

  His eyes dropped to her naked breasts, a cheeky smile spreading across his face. “I could eat.”

  She realized the folly of her question a second too late. His eyebrows danced up and down as he stared down at his nude body before looking at her again. “I have a few things in mind.”

  Katherine giggled as she walked out of the room, his answer quite obvious. “We have all night, sweetheart. I’m not going anywhere,” he shouted from the bedroom.

  He chuckled when he heard her giggling. He got up and dressed, throwing on his slacks and undershirt, not bothering with his black dress shirt. He left his socks and shoes off as well. He planned on spending the day holed up here with Katherine and the fewer clothes he had on, the better.

  She was standing in front of the large window in her living room, the shape of her body outlined with the light streaming through the glass. He shook his head with awe. She was the most beautiful creature he’d ever laid eyes on. He loved her humility and her strength. There was so much more to her than the surface beauty. He realized he admired her and there were few people he could actually say that about.

  She turned to look at him, her phone in her hands and smiled. “What are you doing?”

  “Staring at you.”

  Her warm smile encouraged him. He stepped around the loveseat in the room and wrapped her in his arms. He held her close for several minutes, neither of them speaking. There were a million thoughts running through his mind as his heart seemed to slow and fall into the rhythm of hers. They were truly beating together as one.

  “Do you have to go to the office today?” she asked.

  “Nope. I’m yours all day.”

  She leaned back and looked into his eyes. “All day? Whatever will I do with you?”

  He chuckled low in his throat before kissing the top of her nose. “I’m sure I can think of something.”

  “Well, for now, we’ll enjoy some late lunch or early dinner.”

  “Sounds good to me. What’d you order?”

  She shrugged a shoulder. “I stuck with what I know—Chinese.”

  “Perfect,” he said, taking her hand and leading her to the loveseat.

  “Hold on, I’ll grab our wine,” she said, rushing to the kitchen where they had forgotten all about the wine they had before diving right into hot and heavy sex.

  It had been amazing. But it was always amazing with her. He had a feeling he knew what it was. There was a little something happening deep inside his heart and soul. He thought about telling her he was falling head over heels for her but held back. The ink on her divorce papers wasn’t even dry. Her physical bruises had faded, but he was sure there were plenty more, deep and hidden. He didn’t want to scare her away by professing his love for her, and needed to tread lightly. She tended to be a little gun shy and telling her he loved her could send her underground. She was a runner, with a long history of picking up stakes and moving on without a word.

  “Thank you,” he said, taking the glass from her.

  “You look like you’re a thousand miles away. Is everything okay?”

  He smiled. “It is absolutely perfect. I was thinking about you and this new life you are embarking on.”

  She sat beside him, their thighs touching as they each sipped their wine. I think it is going to take me a while to get used to it. I mean, I know it isn’t going to be easy and I’m sure he is going to contest it, but it feels really good to have actually done something.”

  “You did something huge and I’m proud of you. Whatever you need, I’ll be here for you.”

  There was a brief silence before she leaned forward and picked up her television remote. “I know my TV isn’t quite as massive as yours, but I promise, you’ll still be able to see the picture,” she teased.

  “Ha. Ha.”

  “Is there anything in particular you like to watch?”

  He shrugged a shoulder. “Not really. I’m more of a surfer than a watcher. I get bored fast and tend to change the channel every few minutes.”

  “Then I’m just going to keep my hand on this remote,” she said, moving it away from him.

  He laughed again, more than happy to let her be the one in control. He was happy just sitting next to her. She expertly navigated the channels, landing on a cooking show.

  “I think I’ve heard about this,” he mumbled, immediately drawn into the show.

  She turned up the volume a little. “I’m totally vying for that older lady. She’s a southern homestyle cook, which is my favorite food, even though I don’t eat it all that often.”

  “Why don’t you?”

  She looked at me as if he was daft. “Because the main ingredients are butter, lard and more butter.”

  He burst into laughter. “Sweetheart, a little butter is good for the soul.”

  “And murder on the hips.”

  He reached over and placed a hand on her hip. “I love your hips. I would love them with extra padding. There is nothing you could do to make me not want your body.”

  Her laughter filled his ears. “You say that now. A few weeks of biscuits and gravy, mashed potatoes and my all-time favorite fried chicken, and you will be singing a different tune.”

  “Will you cook a homestyle meal for me one of these days? I mean, I’ve had meatloaf and what not, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had some real comfort food.”

  She kissed him. “I would love to. Maybe some time this week or on the weekend.”

  He nodded his head, happy to hear her planning ahead, even if it was only for a week. It was better than the alternative. He leaned his head back, looking towards the bedroom door where the suitcase had been. It wasn’t there now. That was encouraging.

  There was a knock on the door. “I’ll get it, you keep watching your show,” he said, giving her a quick kiss before standing and moving to the door.

  He insisted on answering the door, not because he wanted her to watch her show, but because in the back of his mind he was still worried about Tim. He didn’t trust the guy. He’d witnessed the man’s rage first hand and couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Katherine alone to face him ever again. He knew he couldn’t protect her twenty-four seven, but he wished she would let him. He thought about hiring a security guard for her, but she would never be okay with that.

  “Thank you,” he said, taking the food, tipping the delivery guy and carrying it to the table. Katherine got up and sauntered into the kitchen as he was spreading out the food.

  “I got a little of everything. I figured it would be great for leftovers—in case we didn’t want to leave,” she said with a co
y smile.

  “That was a very good idea,” he nodded in agreement.

  They sat at the table and feasted upon the meal before refilling their wine glasses and heading back to the loveseat to watch the next episode. Everything felt so right with her. He was going to spend the weekend with her, letting her know how important and special she was to him.

  He wanted her to see how good they were together. Then, one day, he’d be able to tell her how he felt. For now, he’d hang back and just be the strong, silent type of guy, there when she needed him, but not breathing down her neck. He was content just being with her.

  “You’re smiling,” she murmured, turning to look at him.

  “I am.”

  “Why? Do you like this show?”

  He shrugged a shoulder. “I do, but I like watching the show with you better.”

  She kissed him before settling back against his chest. He loved that she seemed completely at ease and vowed to make sure she always felt that way.

  Chapter Three

  Katherine

  KATHERINE WAS STILL riding the high from her long, leisurely weekend with Ben. He’d doted on her, making her feel like a royal princess. She knew he was a good guy, but he had exceeded her expectations. It was like living in a dream. She woken yesterday convinced that Saturday had been a dream. When her eyes adjusted she rolled to her side and saw his dark hair and broad back. It hadn’t been a dream. He was right there beside her.

  They’d spent the weekend at her place, which was a little strange. She offered to go to his much bigger, luxurious house, but he insisted he was comfortable right where he was. She still felt full after the huge meal she had made for him yesterday. She had followed through and prepared a feast including fried chicken, mashed potatoes, biscuits and—trying to be a little healthy—a simple coleslaw.

  She looked in the mirror, feeling a little weird in the fitted shirt and jeans. Her normal attire had been baggy shirts and jeans that weren’t quite as tight. Things were changing. She didn’t care if people noticed her now. She didn’t have to hide anymore.
